A private bus carrying 40 passengers plunged 20 ft into a
stream at a sharp turn killing three persons, including two women, and
injuring 21 at Poriyikal in Punalur town on Saturday morning.
Five among the injured, including the driver, are in a serious
condition and have been admitted to the Government Medical College
Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The rest are undergoing treatment at the
Punalur Government Hospital. The dead were identified as Bhavani, 52,
Chellamma, 52, daily wage earners, and Joy 50, employed at a private
factory. The bus split into two with the roof separating from the
vehicle. Rescuers rushed to the stream and managed to bring out those
trapped inside after slightly lifting the bus with ropes.
The bus was plying on the Punalur- Maniyar- Anchal route.
Eyewitnesses said that the bus was speeding. The police said that the
bus was old and rickety.
