Six drowned as school bus falls into river in Goa on 19 February 2012

A local bus plunged headlong into a river in Aldona, 20 km from Panaji, killing four schoolgirls and two adults on Saturday. A seventh passenger could be missing, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ravindra Yadav said. The bus carrying passengers to the ferry crossing between Aldona and Calvin village rolled down the ferry ramp into the river after the brakes failed.

 

The ferry was on the other side of the river. Both the driver and the cleaner however jumped out to safety, leaving the rest of the passengers, most of them schoolchildren aged 8 to 11, to fend for themselves. The driver Rajesh Naik who also owns the bus has been arrested and booked for culpable homicide, Yadav said. Those killed are Elvina Dias, 11, and her sister Diana aged 8, Priyal Salgaonkar, 10, Nigal Gracias, 10, Josephine Dias, 58 and Dayanand Hoble, 55.

 

 

Eyewitnesses saw the mother of the Dias children running around frantically looking for her missing daughters at the accident site. The girls were all from the St Thomas Girls High School, Aldona, on their way home after an early Saturday break. The accident happened around 12:20 pm.

 

Six bodies were recovered with help from Navy divers, the coast guard and the coastal police. Yadav said locals had shown exemplary bravery in attempting to save the passengers from the submerged bus. The coastal police who arrived in two interceptors within 40 minutes of the accident saw villagers in canoes trying to get to the bus.

 

Witnesses said the coastal police proved of little assistance with no divers on their team. Initial attempts to pull the bus out with ropes proved futile. The crush of people at the accident site deep in the interior of Aldona village also hampered rescue operations.

 

Announcing an interim relief of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the victims of the bus tragedy, the government cancelled the carnival parade scheduled for Saturday evening because of the tragedy, Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava told Deccan Herald.

26 killed in bus accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

 26 people were today killed after a speeding tempo rammed into their stationary bus on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. 17 people were also injured in the incident.

The accident occurred at around 1 am when the victims were returning to Pune after attending a wedding in Mumbai. After their bus broke down at Khalapur on the expressway, the group got down and sat on the road between two buses - the second was also carrying people who were part of the marriage party. It was during this time that the tempo hit one of the buses from the rear, thus resulting in casualties.

The injured were rushed to various hospitals in Pune and Navi Mumbai.

The driver of the tempo, meanwhile, has been detained. The police are in the process of booking him for negligent driving and for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He is likely to be arrested soon and will subsequently be produced in a local court.

Mumbai-Goa bus accident, at least 37 killed

 

 

At least 37 people were killed when a Mumbai-bound private luxury bus plunged into a river in Ratnagiri district of coastal Konkan area, early today.

According to the latest report, 37 people have lost their lives while another 15 stand injured, including five foreign nationals, when a bus plunged into a river in Khed area Tuesday on the Mumbai-Goa highway near here, officials said.

Among the victims are at least five foreign nationals but authorities could not confirm whether they were killed or injured in the accident.

The accident took place around 3.50 am when the Goa-Mumbai bus belonging to Mahakali Travels suddenly lost control on the Bharna bridge over Jagbudi river and crashed into the river, 190 km from Maharashtra capital Mumbai, said B.L. Shinde, an official from the highway department.

"So far, 37 bodies have been removed from the site and there are some more injured passengers, including five whose condition is serious," Shinde told.

The injured, among them the bus driver have been taken to hospitals in Khed and Chiplun and some of the critical victims have been taken to Mumbai.

According to preliminary and eye-witness reports, the accident occurred when the ill-fated bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle, though the exact cause has yet to be determined.

This is considered among the worst accidents on the treacherous Mumbai-Goa highway. Traffic movement has been completely stalled on the highway after the accident.

Home Minister R.R. Patil on Monday informed the Maharashtra assembly that 828 people have been killed and 2,411 seriously injured in road accidents on the Mumbai-Goa highway in the past three years.

Presently, seven highway police help centres are responsible for manning traffic on this highway and the requirements of increasing the number of such centres would be examined, Patil had said.

Following persistent demands by locals and tourists alike, the work on the four-laning of the highway is currently underway.

2 killed as Mumbai-Goa tourist Volvo Bus falls on hilly slope

Two tourists were killed and 48 others were injured when the driver of a luxury Volvo tourist bus running between Mumbai and Goa lost control.

The bus fell and stopped at a lower hilly road, because of which rescuers could easily sent them to government and private hospitals in Ratnagiri.

Accident just before VIP convoy movement in mangalore

The movement of vehicles on the Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway was affected on Monday following an accident between a container lorry and a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus near Narahari Betta. The accident gave anxious moments to officials as Chief Minsiter B.S. Yeddyurappa was to pass by that spot.

According to bus driver C. Ram, the container lorry was going towards Bangalore while he was coming towards Mangalore. Around 2 p.m., the speeding lorry applied brakes at a slope. This turned the bus towards left. The container hit the rear end of the bus. The container also hit an autorickshaw that was parked by the roadside. The lorry driver fled the spot, Mr. Ram said.

Blocked

This accident blocked the movement of traffic on the highway for an hour. The Chief Minister was to pass through the stretch and reach Mangalore. The Bantwal town police rushed to the spot and regulated the movement of traffic.

“We had to stop vehicles from one direction and allow traffic from the opposite direction,” said Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram. Mr. Ram said the accident did not affect the movement of Chief Minister's convoy.

Killed in accident

Two persons were killed in separate accidents that occurred on Sunday. A 45-year-old driver of Railway Mail Service was killed after the vehicle hit Kulur bridge on Sunday evening. The Panambur police said Ramakrishna (45), the RMS van driver was returning to the city after collecting mails from Baikampady. He lost control over the vehicle and hit the bridge wall. Ramakrishna died on the spot, the police said.

Mahendra, 25, was killed after the motorcycle he was riding hit another motorcycle in Lingappayya kadu near Karnadu village in Mulky police station limits.

The Mulky police said Mahendra and his friend Lalith, who was riding pillion, were coming from Mulky towards Lingappayya Kadu. Their motorcycle was hit by the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. Mahendra and Lalith were taken to a private hospital where the former succumbed to injuries. The police are searching for the rider of the motorcycle that hit Mahendra's motorcycle.

30 injured in bus accident in visakhapatnam

Thirty students and some staff accompanying them were injured, when the bus in which they were travelling met with an accident on the Kailasagiri ghat road on Saturday evening.
Fiftysix students, 35 of them from a nursing school in Kakinada and 21 from a Junior College in Yanam, came on an excursion to the city along with a few staff members. The bus was coming down the Kailasagiri hill when the driver realised that the brakes had failed. The alert driver instead of taking a left turn which could have resulted in the bus hurtling down the hillslope, chose to turn right and hit the hill.
Tyagaraya Namah Sivaya, Assistant Director of the Adi Dravida Welfare Department, sustained a head injury and the bus driver N. Bulli Veeranna, 68, was also severely injured. Durga Prasad, 11, brother of one of the students, and two students Rajyalakshmi and Udaya, were also severely injured in the accident. They were shifted to the King George Hospital for treatment.
The other injured students were discharged after first aid.
Mayor P. Janardhana Rao, Police Commissioner N. Sambasiva Rao and other officials went to the spot and supervised relief operations.

52 injured in bus accident in Kollam

More than 52 persons were injured when a Thiruvananthapuram-bound KSRTC fast passenger bus lost control and crashed into a shopping complex near the Taluk Office junction here on Wednesday morning. The injured have been admitted to the nearby district hospital.

One of those injured, Harison, is critical. He was running a way side tea stall at the accident site. The bus crashed through the tea stall spilling the boiling water over Harison. Twenty of those injured were discharged after first aid. The remaining 32 have been admitted.

Eye witnesses said that the accident occurred when the driver of a private bus going in front of the KSRTC bus applied sudden brake to avoid colliding into an autorickshaw. This led to the driver of the KSRTC bus also applying sudden brake. It led to the bus losing control and crashing into the shopping complex.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel, assisted by the police and others who happened to be in the area, engaged in rescue operations. .

bus accident, 8 killed and most passengers fell into a lake

At least eight people were killed as a bus carrying 50 passengers, most of them school and college students, fell into a lake in Karnataka today. Around 40 of them were rescued by police and locals.

The accident happened around 10 am when the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus, travelling from Sakleshpor near Mangalore to Belur in Hassan district, plunged into the Vishwasamudra Lake. Belur is nearly 200 kms away from Bangalore, the state capital.
While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, the state Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy Reddy has said there were two theories doing the round – one that the bus skidded off the road as the driver tried to avoid hitting a vehicle and the other that the axle of the bus got snapped.
The driver and the conductor of the bus survived the mishap. Eleven of those recued have been admitted to a local hospital; two of them are said to be critical.

3 die as bus falls into stream in Punalur

A private bus carrying 40 passengers plunged 20 ft into a stream at a sharp turn killing three persons, including two women, and injuring 21 at Poriyikal in Punalur town on Saturday morning.

Five among the injured, including the driver, are in a serious condition and have been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The rest are undergoing treatment at the Punalur Government Hospital. The dead were identified as Bhavani, 52, Chellamma, 52, daily wage earners, and Joy 50, employed at a private factory. The bus split into two with the roof separating from the vehicle. Rescuers rushed to the stream and managed to bring out those trapped inside after slightly lifting the bus with ropes.

The bus was plying on the Punalur- Maniyar- Anchal route. Eyewitnesses said that the bus was speeding. The police said that the bus was old and rickety.

N. Peethambara Kurup, MP, and Punalur MLA K. Raju called on the relatives of the dead.

Mangalore: Several injured as buses collide near Kudupu Temple

 Several persons were injured in a head-on collision between two buses near Kudupu Temple here on Tuesday February 5 morning.

The accident occured when a Jain Travels bus plying from Karkala to Mangalore rammed into a Pradipta bus moving from Mangalore to Naravi at a turning near the temple.
The two bus drivers are among the injured. Around ten persons are said to have sustained serious injuries.
Close to 20 passengers reportedly escaped with minor injuries.
Two of the injured have been shifted to Tejaswini hospital and the rest to AJ hospital.
Kankanady police arrived at the spot and cleared the road for traffic.

Woman killed, five hurt as goods train rams bus near Mangalore

A 60-year-old woman was killed, and five others, including an eight-year-old child, were injured after a goods train rammed their small bus at an unmanned level-crossing at Adyar on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

The Government Railway Police have identified the deceased as Zulaika. Her relatives Thahira (40), Noor (8), Hussain (25), Mumthaz (35) were injured. Driver Harish (51) suffered minor injuries.

According to Adyar resident Harish Kumar Shetty, the private bus was travelling from National Highway 75 towards Neermarga, when it came across the unmanned level crossing around noon. “Some people had shouted at the driver telling him not to cross. He did not seem to have heard them,” he said.

Just as the bus was crossing the tracks, a goods train coming from Mangalore rammed the back of the bus. The collision was such that the bus spun, and fell into a ditch. “It was kicked like a football,” said Mr. Shetty.

With hardly anyone nearby, it took an hour for the few residents to pull out the passengers. “One mother was screaming ‘Save my daughter’. There were not many of us. It took us time. And, as the goods train had stopped at the crossing itself, no car could come for the rescue,” he said.

Mr. Shetty said the 60-year-old woman was the last to be pulled out. “Her thigh bone was shattered, and with only a few of us there, it took us time to get her out. Her face was turning blue, and she complained that her chest was hurting. It was only after an hour of the incident that she was taken to a hospital in a police jeep,” he said.

While the goods train moved out in an hour, train services on the tracks were stopped till around 5 p.m.

Two teenagers killed in accidents involving buses in BANGALORE

 A mob set on fire a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus that knocked down a 16-year-old boy on Nagawara Road on Wednesday.

The police said that around 10 a.m., the BMTC bus (route no. 290C) hit Mohammed Tabrez while he was crossing Nagawara Road. As Tabrez lay dead in a pool of blood, residents of the area and passers-by threw stones at the bus and set it on fire.

As the crowd gathered at the accident spot and tried to block traffic, there was tension for some time.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot, pacified the crowd and dispersed it. A fire tender put out the fire.

The traffic police have arrested bus driver Ravi and registered a case.

Meanwhile, the Banaswadi police have registered a case of rioting against those who torched the bus.

Boy knocked down

In another incident, a 15-year-old boy was killed after a BMTC bus hit his scooter in Wilson Garden police station limits on Wednesday morning.

The police gave the name of the dead as Gautham, an SSLC student of BHS High School in Jayanagar and son of Venkoba Rao, a resident of Wilson Garden.

The police said that around 5.45 a.m., Gautham, who had been for tuition, was riding a friend's scooter on 10th Cross, Wilson Garden, when the bus hit him. He was killed on the spot. The Wilson Garden traffic police have seized the bus and registered a case.

Three injured

Three persons were injured in a collision between a lorry and a goods van on 50-foot road at Srinagar on Wednesday. The accident occurred around 8.15 a.m. at a gradient in Nagendra Block. As the lorry overturned, the vehicular movement on the busy road was affected for nearly two hours. The traffic police, who diverted the movement of vehicles, used a crane and got the lorry removed from the middle of the road.

15 killed as tempo collides with bus in Karnataka Tumkur on June 27, 2011

Fifteen people were killed Monday when their tempo collided with a passenger bus on the Bangalore-Pune highway near Karnataka''s Tumkur town. “The tragic mishap occurred when the overcrowded tempo collided head-on with a state-run passenger bus while attempting to overtake another vehicle on Bangalore-Pune National Highway Number 4,” Tumkur Deputy Commissioner C. Somashekara told IANS. The accident took place near Tumkur, about 75 km from here, around 1 p.m. Passengers in the KSRTC bus coming to Bangalore from Shimoga escaped with minor injuries. The victims were all from the tempo and belonged to Gubbi village, about 20 km from Tumkur. “Of the 20 people travelling in the tempo, five people who were injured in the mishap have been rushed to the state-run hospital at Tumkur. The bodies of the victims will be shifted from the spot at Heggare village to Tumkur for identification and handing over to their relatives,” Somashekara said.

According to one of the injured, the young tempo driver, who also died in the mishap, overtook a vehicle and collided with the bus coming from the opposite side at high speed. “As a result, the 15 people belonging to different families died instantaneously. The state government has decided to give Rs.50,000 each to the families of the victims after identification as compensation and Rs.15,000 to the injured,” Somashekara said. The district police also ordered an inquiry and booked a case of negligence against the tempo’s owner and driver for carrying seven more passengers than its capacity of 13, including the driver.

Eight dead in Karnataka bus mishap, two critical in Hassan, Karnataka.

 Eight people drowned when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus plunged into Vishnusamudra lake at Belur today, with police and locals rescuing 40 passengers.
Eleven passengers were admitted to a local hospital where two were stated to be critical, police said.

The bus proceeding from Sakleshpur to Belur had several students on board, police said. There were reports that the bus was carrying 50-60 passengers.
Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said according to his information the bus had about 50 passengers.
Eight bodies have been pulled out of the lake, where the water storage level was low and the silt had accumulated, they said, adding fire brigade, police and local fishermen, were engaged in relief operations.
Reddy said there were two versions about the cause of the accident — one that the bus tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle and skidded off the road and the other that the axle got snapped.
He said the driver and conductor survived the mishap.
Hundreds of onlookers gathered around the lake, impeding rescue and relief operations.

Karnataka: Bus overturns, 30 charred to death

Thirty people, including 15 women and 10 children, were charred to death and 25 others injured when a Karnataka roadways bus overturned and burst into flames near Challakere area of Chitradurga district on Sunday.

The mishap in which five men were also burnt alive, occurred at around 2.30 am about 40 kms from Chitradurga.

State Transport Minister R Ashok said that according to preliminary reports, the driver's "negligence" could have caused the accident.

3 Chikmagalur: Five Dead, 29 Injured in KSRTC Bus Accident in Chikmagalur, on Oct25

 Five persons, including a woman, died and 29 others were injured when the Karnataka State Road Transport Coporation bus in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree near Birur, 50 km from here on Tuesday October 25.




The front portion of the bus was completely smashed in the process.

The injured have been admitted to a Hospital in Shimoga and government hospital in Tarikere respectively, police said.

Five people were killed when bus carrying passengers collided head-on with a truck near Eraballi village in Chitradurga district, Karnataka, about 200 kilometers from Bangalore city. Initial reports suggested that the driver of the bus tried overtaking through poor visibility in the early hours of morning and collided with a truck coming from the opposite side.

Nearby villagers rushed to the spot and were involved in rescue operation before the police reached the spot. Traffic along the Hiriyur-Bellary road was held for few hours due to the accident.

Jammu and Kashmir: 16 Amarnath pilgrims killed in road accident

 

Sixteen Amarnath pilgrims lost their lives on Thursday after the truck they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Mansar in Samba district of Jammu. Sixteen others were said to be injured in the accident.
The truck carrying the 34 pilgrims, who were engaged in setting a community kitchen at Amarnath, was returning back when it skidded off the road and rolled down deep into the gorge near Zamoorha Morh in Mansar belt of Samba district, about 50 kilometres from Jammu city at 11:30 pm on Thursday, police said.
After getting information, police, Army and BSF rushed to the spot. Sixteen injured pilgrims were rushed to the Government Medical College in Jammu.
Police said nine pilgrims died on the spot and seven others succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital. Two other pilgrims on the vehicle who sustained minor injuries were discharged after first-aid.
This was second major accident involving Amarnath yatris in Jammu region this month. Fifteen pilgrims were killed when a SRTC bus bringing them back from the yatra had rolled down into a gorge near Ramban on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on the night of July 14.

11 killed, 58 injured in road mishap in Udhampur

Eleven persons were today killed and 58 injured, seven of them seriously, when an over-loaded mini bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The mishap occurred when the driver of the bus, which was on its way from Latti to Chenani, lost control over the vehicle, they said, adding, the vehicle skid off the road and fell into the 330-feet deep gorge at Choka Nallah, about 125-kms from here, they said.

Six persons died on the spot and five others succumbed on their way to hospital in Chenani, they said.

Police and CRPF, besides local people, launched a rescue operation, they said, adding all the injured have been hospitalized.

Out of the 58 injured, 12 persons were airlifted to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here, they said, adding, death toll is likely to increase.

Meanwhile, Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma expressed grief over the incident and directed the Chief Medical Officer Udhampur to provide urgent medical aid to the injured.

At least eight people were killed and 30 injured in two road accidents on the Jammu-Srinagar highway Sunday, police said.

In the first accident, seven people died and 29 were injured when the bus they were travelling in skidded off the road near Nadini, some 30 km north of here.

The dead included four children. The condition of five of the injured is critical.

In the second accident near Ramban town, some 160 km from here, a vehicle skidded off the highway, killing one passenger on the spot.

15 killed, 24 injured in Kashmir road accident

 At least 15 people were killed and 24 injured when a truck fell into a deep gorge in Budhal area of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district early Friday, police said. "The driver lost control over the steering and the truck fell into a 300-feet gorge, killing 15 people travelling in it," a police official said. Among those killed were four infants in the age group of one-two years, he added.
Of the 24 injured, the condition of seven is stated to be critical and they have been shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu. The truck driver is among those seriously injured.

16 killed in bus accident in Jammu region

 At least 16 people were killed and 44 others injured when a bus carrying a marriage party rolled down into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district Saturday evening, police said.

The bus was carrying 60 people to Dudu Basantgarh, about 110 km north of Jammu, when it skidded off the road and rolled down into the gorge.

'The bus rolled down about 300 feet into a deep gorge,' said a police officer.

Twelve people were killed on the spot, while four others died of injuries, and 44 others, including the bridegroom, were injured. The police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) units immediately started the rescue operation.

'There are chances of the toll rising,' said the officer.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of lives.

Mountainous roads in Jammu region are notorious for road accidents. These are mostly attributed to over-loading of passenger buses, poor maintenance of vehicles, and shabby road conditions coupled with lack of skills to drive in mountainous conditions.

The tractor was carrying about 60 people in its trailer. They were returning home after attending a marriage in a nearby village. The tractor in which they were travelling fell into a gorge at Upara Anchalbadi ghat in Rayagada district’s Kalyansighpur area on Friday evening. All the injured persons were taken to Rayagada district headquarters hospital. The accident took place under Kalyansinghpur police station.  The district administration has shifted 14 critically injured to Care hospital in Visakhapatnam.

Meanwhile Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressing deep grief over the loss of precious human lives.  Chief Minister 's office said in a statement hat the government would bear all the expenses of the treatment of the injured. Patnaik has also directed the local administration to move the critically ill to nearby best hospital in Visakhapatnam town for better treatment if it is required, the statement said. CM Patnaik also talk to Rayagada district collector Sashi Bhusan Padhi over phone.

At least five people have been killed and 38 others injured on Thursday when a bus veered off the road and hit a tree, catching alight in India’s Bolanigr district in Odisha, said police authorities. Two women were among the dead.

The passenger bus was travelling from Bhubaneswar towards Sinappali in Nuapada when the accident took place, just three kilometres from the town in the early hours of Thursday morning. It is not clear what the cause of the accident was, however surviving passengers said that the bus driver may have been on his cell phone when he lost control of the bus and hit into a tree on the side of the road.
Soon after crashing into the tree, the bus caught on fire. Five passengers were burnt to death, while 38 others suffered a variety of injuries ranging from mild lacerations to severe burns. The injured passengers were treated at the scene by first responders and then transported via ambulance to the Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital. Once stabilized, two of the injured were transferred to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla, where they remain in a critical condition.
Two of the five deceased have been identified as Mrs Sakuntala Devi Agarwal, 55, of Boudh, and her six year old grandson, Srianshu Goel. Efforts are being made to contact family members and identify the remaining bodies, said police authorities.
The police are also on the hunt for the bus driver and the conductor of the bus, who both fled from the scene of the accident.
In other bus accident news, 34 people were injured in Ohio in the United States after a bus rear-ended a passenger car on a highway near Bowling Green on Tuesday evening at approximately 10.30pm. All five passengers in the car, including two young children, were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries with 29 passengers on the bus also sustained minor injuries. One of the bus passengers was transported to hospital by helicopter, where he was treated for more serious injuries.
The bus, which was operated by the Consolidated Biscuit Co., was transporting employees back from work. Although the cause of the accident is not yet know, police have reported that from the results of their initial investigation, alcohol and drugs did not play a role in the accident.
This accident was the second bus accident in Ohio that day, after a bus carrying only the 75 year old driver crashed at 11.30pm on Tuesday night. He was not injured.

10 killed in Orissa road accident in Bhubaneswar

 
At least 10 people, including three women, were killed and 20 injured when a truck hit a private bus in Orissa's Sambalpur district Thursday, police said.

The accident took place when a truck collided with the speeding bus at Babubandh village on national highway 6, about 330 km from here, a police official told FacenFacts.

While six people died on the spot, the others were declared dead in hospital. The condition of some of the injured is serious, the official said.

Cop falls off bike on uneven road, run over by truck in thane

An uneven paver-blocked patch on the busy Thane-Belapur road proved fatal for assistant sub-inspector Tukaram Phadtare (52), who was run over by a truck after his motorcycle skidded near Vitawa early on Tuesday.

Bad road condition caused the accident, said Prakash Nilewad, senior inspector, Kalwa police station. Phadtare's bike could have slipped on the uneven surface and the truck driver was unable to control his speed and ran over him, said an officer. The police have arrested truck driver Munna Suraman Turi and booked him for negligent and rash driving.

Around 5.30am, Phadtare of the Daighar police station was heading home in Navi Mumbai when he met with the accident. Phadtare was taken to the nearby Chhatrapati Shivaji hospital, but he died before admission.

A preliminary probe by the police suggested that the paver blocks fitted on a small patch were not aligned with the concrete road. Questions are now being raised about failure on part of the private contractor to ensure that the paver blocks were fitted well as the patch had sunk in slightly, indicating shoddy work. Also, the gap between the road and the paver block surface is wide and could prove fatal for two-wheelers, just as it did for Phadtare.

Recently, a woman, Shraddha Nair, was run over by a vehicle after being thrown off a bike when it hit an uneven paver block patch in Powai.

On July 2, Umesh Shinde (28), a civil engineer, lost his life after he was flung onto the road from his scooter, unable to navigate a pothole on the Western Express Highway in Malad (east). On July 11, Jaideep Karveer (21), an engineering student, was run over by a truck after his bike hit a crater on the Western Express Highway in Goregaon. On July 19, when Asha Damdare (48) and her daughter were returning to their Kolasowadi home in Vasai (east), their two-wheeler struck a pothole and the vehicle fell. Asha, who sustained serious injuries to her head and back, died two days later. On August 11, Dombivli housewife Vidya Naik had fallen off her bike after it hit a pothole near her house. She succumbed to head injuries in hospital five days later.

2 die on way to dahi handi, 246 govindas injured during revelry in MUMBAI

Gokulashtami revelry turned tragic on Thursday with deaths of two govindas in unrelated road accidents. SanketMohite (21) succumbed to head injuries after meeting with a bike accident on way to break a dahihandi. He was riding triple seat from Wadala to Bandra-Kurla Complex when the accident took place. Mumbai's PrashantSatpute, too, died in a bike collision at Kopri bridge in Thane. He was part of Jai Hind MitraMandal from Sion.

Across the city, govindas suffered fewer falls this year compared to the previous years. Till Thursday evening, 246 injured govindas were taken to hospitals in the city.

Most of the injuries were minor or fractures at the most. A total of 180 injured Govindas were discharged by evening after treatment. A few, though, were serious.

Three youths from Worli were on their way to break a handi in Mahim and were travelling on top of a truck with their mandal when a rope of a handi hit their necks and they fell off the truck. All three of them suffered injuries.

One of them, who is in his mid-20s, fell on his head. "We rushed him to Raheja Hospital but he was shifted to Sion Hospital from there. Once there, we were told to take him to KEM Hospital as no ventilator was available," said Vishal Lokare, a fellow govinda who was also present in the truck.

Apart from these, 70 govindas were injured while trying to build a human pyramid in the various dahi handi programmes held across Thane on Thursday. Thirty had to be hospitalized for treatment of internal injuries.

An all-girls' troupe 'Ranzhunjhar Mandal' from Borivli suffered the most. Sixteen girls, all first-time participants, were injured while attempting a pyramid at Panchpakhadi area in Thane (West).

A govinda, Sashikant Mane (25), suffered a spinal cord injury and had to be rushed to J J Hospital.

Bomb blast at Chandni Chowk in Kolkata creates panic

A 'box bomb' on Friday exploded in the busy Chandni Chowk area in Central Kolkata creating panic in the locality during peak office hours.
Police, however, said there was no casualty. They said that a box, which was lying near the crossing of Central Avenue and Madan street, suddenly exploded in the busy area, where people were on way to their offices.
Police immediately rushed to the area along with the city police Bomb Squad and sniffer dogs to ascertain if any other bombs remained planted around the place. "Fortunately, there is no casualty or injury in the incident. An investigation is on," the police said.
"Preliminary investigation reveals that the incident was not a serious one. Normalcy has been restored in the entire area," the police said.

Two killed in Kolkata blast

Two people, including a woman, were killed and several others injured in an explosion that took place in a multi-storey building in the city’s Metiabruz area on Sunday.
According to police reports, the blast took place around 9.00 p.m. when at least 15 people, including some women, were working in an embroidery workshop housed in a building.

The blast took place at a multi storey building. Two people were killed and seven others were injured in the explosion,” said a senior police officer.
The two died on the spot while the rest sustained critical burnt injuries. The impact of the blast was so heavy that a major portion of the building and few others located nearby were badly damaged. The injured have been admitted to SSKM hospital.
Senior police officers including a bomb and dog squad are at the spot. The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.

06 Malegaon blasts: 9 accused get NIA clean chit in MUMBAI

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday gave a clean chit to nine accused in the 2006 Malegaon serial blasts. In its reply filed before the special court, the agency did not oppose the discharge applications filed by the accused.

"It is submitted that the evidence collected by the NIA in further investigations is not in consonance with the evidence collected earlier by the ATS and the CBI. No evidence was found in support of the conclusion drawn in the final report filed by the ATS and a supplementary final report submitted by CBI recommending prosecution of Accused no 1, Accused no 2, ...nine accused," the reply stated. The court will pass orders on the discharge applications on September 7. While two accused-Shaikh Mohammed Ali Alam Shaikh and Asif Khan-are also facing trial in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, the rest are out on bail.

after the NIA did not oppose it. Reacting to the development Asif told TOI, "I am happy and relieved that my innocence has been proved. Its been seven years and I hope that I am also acquitted in the train blasts case." Asif said that his family was elated with the news.

The state ATS had nabbed them claiming that they belonged to the banned Students Islamic Movement of India and aided a Pakistani national in executing the strike. The NIA took over the probe after Swami Aseemanand's confession that a right-wing group was behind the blasts.The ATS had charged the nine with helping a Pakistani, Muzammil, in carrying out the blasts. They had said Muzammil had travelled to Malegaon with RDX to assemble the bombs, three of which were planted on the premises of the Hameediya mosque and a fourth at Mushawerat chowk.

Four bombs went off late in the evening on September 8, 2006, when Muslims had gathered at cemeteries for Shab-e-Baarat prayers, killing 31 and injuring 297. The 2006 blasts case was first investigated by the ATS followed by the CBI. Both accused the nine youngsters-Noor-ul-Huda (24), Shabbir Masiullah (34), Raees Ahmed Ali (35), unani doctors Salman Farsi and Farog Makhdoomi, Mohammed Ali, Jalgaon mechanical engineer Asif Bashir Khan alias Junai, Mohammed Zahid Majeed, and Abrar Ahmed Saeed (35)-of the blasts.

Two dead, 38 injured in blaze at HPCL refinery in vizag

Some more workers are feared to be trapped under the debris of the cooling tower that collapsed after the fire that raged for nearly an hour before being doused.

According to eye-witnesses, the mishap occurred at around 4.30 pm when contract workers were carrying out welding work at the site of the under renovation cooling tower as part of the modernization works at the refinery.

Nearly 77 contract workers from three subcontracting firms were understood to have been at the site when the mishap took place. These include fabrication and erection contractors Gopal Engineering and Jayalakshmi as well as wood works firm Bridge & Roof.

While the body of an unidentified, badly charred worker was shifted to King George Hospital, the second person Murari Pradhan (32) succumbed to his burns at Manipal Hospital. The injured workers were first rushed to the INS Kalyani Naval Hospital opposite the HPCL main gate for first aid and from there to various hospitals in the city.

Confirming the casualties, in-charge district collector Praveen Kumar said two people were killed in the fire and more people could be trapped under the debris of the cooling tower.

"One person was badly charred to death and is yet to be identified. Another person Murari Pradhan too has died. A 38-member National Disaster Response Force from Guntur is on its way to carry out search and rescue operations at the site as the cooling tower has collapsed and the area is still scorching hot. An enquiry will be conducted into the cause of the fire," Praveen Kumar said. However, HPCL officials were not available for comment.

When city police commissioner B Shivadhar Reddy visited the accident site, he said that three people were suspected to be missing.

Joint chief inspector of factories Chandrasekhar Varma, who also visited the site, said HPCL was conducting trial runs at the ill-fated cooling tower, which was just renovated, by running hot water through the pipeline.

However, one of the workers alleged that a naphtha pipeline running below the cooling tower had been leaking for the past few days despite which the authorities had allowed welding work to be carried out at the site.

Irate workers said this was the second mishap to take place at the ill-fated cooling tower. Govind Rao, one of the contract workers, said that the cooling tower had collapsed two months ago and the latest incident took place when they were trying to erect it again.
