13 slain in Indian apartment collapse

Poor construction leads to house collapse in India.
At least 13 have died and 11 injured in a building collapse in Coimbatore town in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu after heavy rains.

Three women and a 9-year-old boy were among those killed when the three-storied residential building with about two dozen apartments collapsed on Friday night after heavy rains.

The apartments built by the government 30 years ago had developed deep cracks and residents had been advised to move out for repair work.

Twelve bodies were recovered from the debris within hours of the collapse on Friday night and another body was recovered on Saturday, the police said.

Another 14 residents, who were injured in the collapse, were being treated in various hospitals in Coimbatore, which lies about 600 kilometers south-west of Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.

Such accidents are common in India, where houses and flyovers often collapse because of heavy rain, poor construction materials or the flouting of building regulations.
