India bus crash leaves 35 dead

About 120,000 people die annually in road accidents in India.
A head-on collision between a bus and a truck has killed at least 35 people and injured dozens of others in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The accident happened near the town of Badaun, which is located 175 miles (280 kilometers) southwest of the state capital, Lucknow.

State police officials say several people were injured in the incident and the death toll could rise because some of the injured are in critical condition.

The bus was carrying mourners returning from a funeral.

India is notorious for its poor road safety record. Most accidents are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and poorly-maintained roads. Government data show around 120,000 people lose their lives in road incidents each year.
