A horrible tragedy marred Chhath's festive spirit when at least 22 people, including 17 children, were killed after a makeshift bridge collapsed triggering panic and funnelling people towards another bridge resulting in a massive stampede at Adalat ghat on the Ganga here on Monday.
Administration officials fear that the toll could rise. More than 40 people were injured, many of them in critical condition.
