14-year-old dies in car crash in Jamshedpur

The car in which Rishi Chaudhury was travelling bears telltale evidence of his death on Tuesday. A teenaged boy, part of an eight-member family returning from a wedding in Golmuri, Jamshedpur, died on the spot when the car he was travelling in was hit by another at Agrico signal post late on Monday night. The seven others also sustained injuries. Rishi Chaudhury (14), a Class IX student of Jusco School in South Park, was seated in the front while his father Debashish Chaudhury, an employee of Tata Steel, was at the wheels of the Wagon R. The condition of Rishi’s twin sister Ishani and 85-year-old maternal grandfather S.N. Ghosh, who have been admitted to Tata Main Hospital, is serious. The other family members — Rishi’s mother Nupur Ghosh, grandmother Bharati Ghosh, uncle Gautam Ghosh and aunt Sunita Ghosh — did not sustain life-threatening injuries. However, they are in severe trauma. The occupants of the other car, a Maruti Swift that apparently belongs to a relative of a local politician, fled, leaving behind the vehicle. Police said one of them must have been injured in the accident that occurred around 12.30am. “Debashish had gone to the marriage reception with his in-laws. He was supposed to drop them at their residence in Sakchi before driving to his own home at Kadma’s Inner Circle Road,” said R.N. Bose, a relative of the family. According to police, the Wagon R, which was coming from Sidhgora, was taking a left turn at Agrico signal post when the speeding Maruti Swift from Golmuri’s side hit it, causing it to turn on its side. Though Rishi died on the spot, passers-by rushed him, along with the others, to the hospital. But doctors declared him brought dead. Officer-on-duty of Sidhgora police station sub-inspector D.B. Singh “We have reports that one occupant of the other vehicle was also injured, but the person went missing along with the driver,” Singh said. Rishi’s body has been sent to MGM Medical College for post-mortem.
