Mangled metal:The car that was involved in an accident at Nagarabavi in Bangalore on Friday.
The car carrying the BPO employees to an amusement park on the outskirts of the city was apparently at great speed when the driver lost control and hit the median at Nagarabavi Circle here on Friday.
Damodar Shetty, who was at the wheel, lost control when they approached the junction of Nagarabavi Circle, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West) Panduranga H. Rane said.
It was around 9.30 a.m. when the car tried to take a right turn towards Jnana Bharathi campus from the service road of the Outer Ring Road, an officer at Kamakshipalya traffic police station said, quoting eye-witnesses.
“The car was at high speed and the driver could not successfully negotiate the curve, which led to the vehicle climbing on the median and hitting the high-mast streetlight,” the official added.
The concrete structure of the divider broke due to the impact. Parts of the mangled remains of the car were found strewn along the divider and on the road.
“Motorists, especially college students, are found driving at a speed of more than 120 km per hour nowadays,” said Honne Gowda, an advocate, who witnessed the accident.
“The driver could not control the car, and within seconds, the car rammed the road-divider,” he said.
One of the dead, Divya, was a paying guest at Malleswaram, while Mr. Shetty and Sumith Deb were staying in J.P. Nagar. Another deceased Jyothimoyi Sarkar was staying at Hebbal.
The police have recorded the statement of Mr. Deb, who is in hospital.
He filed a complaint against Mr. Shetty and reportedly told the police that he (Mr. Shetty) “failed to control the vehicle” and rammed the divider.
The police have booked a case against Mr. Shetty based on Mr. Deb's complaint.
“He has been booked for rash driving, culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing hurt by an act of endangering life or personal safety of others,” a police official said.
