Eight persons were killed and 11 injured in a road
accident involving three vehicles at Kanakapura in the early hours of
Thursday.
According to the police, a lorry going to Kanakapura from Bangalore
rammed a mini-truck and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) coming towards
the city on Kanakapura Road around 2 a.m.
Killed on the spot
In the impact, Basavaraj (23), driver of the SUV, Murali (18),
Shivakumar (19) and Lingappa (21), occupants of the sports utility
vehicle, and Gowdappa (24), Marappa (50), Mallappa (45) and Reddappa
(12), occupants of the mini-truck, were killed on the spot.
Those travelling in the mini-truck were labourers from Surpur and
Sedam taluks of Gulbarga district, residing in slums in ISRO Layout in
Bangalore.
They were returning from work, the police said.
Admitted to hospital
Some of the injured were admitted to the National Institute of Mental
Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) and some to the Sanjay Gandhi
Accident Hospital and Research Institute.
The injured include Ningappa (21), Devappa (19), Piddappa (29),
Peddappa (19), Mudukappa (22), Manappa (20), Shekhar (27), Siddappa
(18), Solappa (50), Yellappa (22) and Krishna (50).
Six people were in the sports utility vehicle and 16 in the mini-truck, the police added.
The police said that the driver of the truck had fled the spot after abandoning the vehicle.
A case had been registered in connection with the accident, the polcie added.
