India has the highest number of road accidents in the world.
At
least 42 people, including 33 family members of a marriage ceremony,
have been killed and seven others injured in two separate accidents in
northern India.
The accidents happened in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh in
northern India on Wednesday evening and early Thursday, Xinhua reported.A truck carrying members of a family from Chaura to Shekhpur plunged into a 300-feet gorge near Shekhpur early Thursday, killing 33 people, the report added.
Seven wounded passengers were rushed to a state-run hospital while police carried out rescue operations.
In a separate accident, nine people lost their lives when their vehicle rolled into another gorge in the same district.
In early January, at least 22 people were killed and 19 others sustained injures after a bus veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in India's northern state of Uttarakhand.
The World Health Organization has revealed in its first ever Global Status Report on Road Safety that more people die in road accidents in India than anywhere else in the world, including the more populous China.
More than 110,000 people die each year across the country in crashes caused by speeding, bad roads, overcrowding and poor vehicle maintenance, according to police.
