19 killed in Kolkata market fire, Congress demands probe

13:54 pm: Mamata Banerjee personally monitoring the process of autopsy at the hospital. 13:49 pm: Death toll rises to 19 in the Kolkata market fire. Autopsy has been done and bodies will soon be handed over to the families.

12:22 pm: Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Suryakant Mishra says, "No time for blame game. Enquiry has to be done. If not satisfied a higher level enquiry is needed."
12:00: Deputy Mayor Farzana Alam also blames the Left government and says, "It is the previous government's fault. We will check the license of this building. I am unable to get into the building now but I will take action at the earliest."
11:46am: Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy says, "Minister for disaster management, the Mayor and the Chief Minister have reached the spot. Once we get report we will see."
11:34 am: Rescue operation over at Surya Sen market. Mamata Banerjee visits Calcutta Medical College where the injured have been admitted.

11:26 am: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee adds, "People need to stop living in godowns and dingy shops. The government will provide them shelters if needed."
11:24 am: Mamata Banerjee says the State government will give Rs 2 lakh to the kin of those who died. Those injured will be given Rs 50,000.
11:20 am: Mamata Banerjee addresses reporters at the site. "After the AMRI fire incident, the government requested all buildings to follow safety norms. No one follows the norms," says Mamata.
11:11 am: Death toll rises to 18 in a massive fire that broke out at a market near the Calcutta University campus in the wee hours of Wednesday.
11:08 am: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reaches the accident site.
Rescue workers are evacuating people trapped in the blaze that broke out at 3:50 am in Surya Sen market in Sealdah.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Four people have so far been evacuated by the fire department officials. More people are feared trapped inside the market. Around 20 fire engines were rushed to the spot. The injured have been taken to Calcutta Medical College.
Hours after the major fire, politics has started over the tragedy. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and state Fire Services Minister Javed Khan has blamed the Left for the incident and said that the building in which the fire broke out came up during their tenure.
