Indian bystanders watch as a crane retrieves the bus from a pond in Hajo, a village near Guwahati.
A bus carrying a wedding party has plunged into a large pond in India's remote north-eastern state of Assam, killing at least 27 people, an official said on Tuesday.
The bus was crossing a wooden bridge over the pond when the bridge gave way. The bus fell more than 4.5 metres (15ft) into the water below, local magistrate SK Roy said.
The accident took place late on Monday night near Hajo, a village about 25 miles (40km) west of Guwahati, capital of the state.
Villagers recovered 27 bodies from the pond. Eight people were rescued and were recovering in hospital.
Family members said there had been 43 people on board the bus.
Police divers were searching for the remaining bodies, said Swapnanil Deka, a senior police officer.
Thousands of villagers had gathered at the accident site. The 27 bodies, shrouded in white cloth, had been laid out by the side of the pond, local television showed.
India has the highest annual road-death toll in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. More than 110,000 people die annually in road accidents, according to police figures.
