
Gory Sight: People having a look at the mangled bus and the overturned tipper on NH-5, near Kothur village, where the accident occurred, in Nellore district on Monday.
According to Venkatachalam police, S. Radha Kumari (43), her daughter - Sirisha (24), and Saikumar (14), Radha Kumari's nephew, all residents of Malkapuram Colony, Visakhapatnam, and bus driver P. L. Narayana (46), died when the APSRTC Garuda bus in which they were travelling hit a stationary tipper on National Highway 5, near Kothur village.
The bus was proceeding from Visakhapatnam to Chennai when the accident occurred. Radha Kumari was working in a private company in Chennai, while her husband, S. Pradeep, stays abroad. Twelve others, including second driver, M. Venkata Naga Prasad, another passenger, Vineela, suffered serious injuries and were shifted to Narayana General Hospital.
The front portion of the bus was completely damaged in the accident. The victims were seated on the first two seats (on right side) of the vehicle.
In another accident, two persons – Ch. Ramana Reddy (40) and M. Malakondaiah (60) – died instantaneously when a car hit an auto in which the victims were travelling. The accident occurred near Teddupadu village in Varikuntapadu mandal in the district. Three others suffered injuries in the accident.
Vizag Staff Reporter adds: RTC Regional Manager P.V. Rama Rao said that Ms. Radha Kumari's son was informed about the accident. A total of 12 passengers of the bus were injured in the accident.
He said that the bus rammed into a lorry that was stranded beside the road without any parking lights or other indicators on. The RTC driver, who had an excellent track record, was driving Garuda (Volvo) buses for the past five years.
